Call me over-secure, but I'm less trusting of the world with the things I've seen in the IT world! It would be totally different, but similar. But right now, yes, they are going through the data ports via the USB port on the public device. But if they somehow tie that into the electrical box, and then through your block and then into your USB port where you charge from anyway - I don't trust them.

It IS an easy fix right now, but using the data blocker would entirely eliminate any charging issues in public entirely. And wouldn't surprise me if soon phones will have an option to charge with or without the data port open.
I carry a portable charging unit. Then I charge that at public places. Not my phone or tablet.
