Los Lonely Boys are pretty good too, I like their music.

If I may take this opportunity to recommend some very good music, check out Kenny Wayne Shepherd: 10 Days Out; Blues From The Backroads. Some of the best music I've heard in years.

    From Amazon:

I have not yet watched the DVD (it's sold as a CD/DVD combo) but if it's half as good as the music, I'll be happy.
The article mentions Clarence Gatemouth Brown, I saw him 25 years ago at Boo Boos Dance Hall in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana........ he was incredibly talented and hillarious as hell.

I agree about Carlos, I have always been amazed at how he is left out of great guitarist lists. He can put more feeling into a single sustained note than most do in an entire song.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'm heading to the Apple music site after I finish this.

I'm not a White Stripes fan. Nothing against them, just can't dig that style of theirs. I will admit that Jack is a pretty damn good guitarist though. With that said, he has a long road ahead of him to be considered amongst the elites such as "Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Stevie Ray, Santana..." But of course everyone's list will vary based on their taste.

Here's a guitar player you can "feel". Joe Satriani doesn't have vocals, almost all of his music is instrumental. When you listen to his guitar playing you can 'truly' feel it, IMO.

Polls are simply a reflection of current popularity, and not actual playing ability.
Jack White mentioned in the top 1000 is just a joke, but the fact that Kurt Cobain makes the list tells one that whoever can be creative with three chords can be popular.

Of course.....Satriani. He, along with DiMeola, Eric Johnson, Jeff Beck, Ottmar Liebert, Jesse Cook........ all guitar virtuosos.

White Stripes are very bad at what they do and to think that they could get a recording contract while truely great musicians end up never being heard is didturbing. Jack has no rythum, no soul, no real talent.......just stating fact. There are a million guitarists around the world that could play circles around him and will never be heard because they don't have the right connections. I normally ignore such nobodies but had to state my opinion once obama elevated them to the status of his avatar.
Well, if it counts for anything, I hate Dave Matthews and hip hop.

I don't know, for some reason, you guys are saying "well, Jack White's not as good as the ABSOLUTE GREATEST GUITARISTS in history, so obviously he sucks". Maybe he's not Hendrix, but that doesn't mean he's the worst guitarist ever.

As for Satriani, Eric Johnson, etc., I "feel" absolutely nothing when I listen to their music. It's great playing, but there's no heart to it, to me, anyway. It's the difference between reading a textbook (Satriani, et al) and a great short story (Jack White).

I think you guys should give him more of a chance. He's written great country/folk music, great blues music, great punk music, great straight-ahead country music, and by the way he doesn't just play guitar; check out the White Stripes' album Get Behind Me, Satan, it's mostly dark, moody piano-based songs.

Simply misunderstood! some are talking playing ability while other are more or less going with current trends of the music scene. I have no doubt that Jack White is not the worst in history as he has already accomplished quite a bit but to claim him to be anywhere in sight of best guitarist is rediculous. Rate him for his writing ability is fine but to place him above accomplished players mentioned throughout this thread shows these polls are simply popularity contests. Rolling Stone magazine sucks anyway!

But every once-in-a-while, they produce a great cover.

Seriously. And the weirdest thing is, he's looked that way for decades.

I just love that picture. It's RS's version of Beauty and the Beast.

Yeah Keith looks to be about 103 in that picture yet he is still falling out of trees, the man defies time & logic!

I'm not a Joe Satriani fan. I don't his style or sound. I prefer a much more raw, improvised sound. But that's me.

And your right, Jack White hasn't been around as long but, if you recall, the above mentioned probably sounded a lot like noise at first too.

Jimi Hendrix, absolutely! The first few times I heard him playing it sounded like nothing more than distortion. Then I expanded my listening to other songs and realized just how good he was. I don't always base 'talent' on whether or not it's my style of music. Personally, I don't like the songs that Hendrix made, but I still say his one of the all time best. CC Deville was an awesome guitarist and never got the recognition he deserved because he played for an 80's 'hair band'. Steve Vai got recognition, but doesn't make the greatest players of all time because many feel he was a 'speed guitarist'. Everyone likes a different style of music but I still don't think that means a guitarist is bad or good. I'm not a big fan of the Blues, but I was in New Orleans a few years back and stumbled drunk into a few blues bars and heard some of the best playing I've ever heard before, from no name guys! Richie Sambora is another that never gets the credit due because everyone is too busy ogling at the singer.

I'm just a fan of music in general and am willing to give anything a try, and play over and over what I enjoy! While not a White Stripes fan, I admit to loving this song! (and hell, the video is pretty good too!)

Figures you'd pick a cover! It was originally a (I believe) Burt Bacharach song. Really good cover, though, and a sweet video!

Good one and the video doesn't hurt either.

A lot of really good guitar players never really did get the recognition they deserve. Frank Zappa is one as well as Stephen Stills (CSNY). Another good one is John Frusciante (Red Hot Chilie Peppers).

Michael Schenker still rules for me! Approached by the rolling stones, aerosmith, ozzy, whitesnake to name a few for his axe playing ability, that makes for a pretty awesome resume.
