Standard tests do not tell you which variant you have.

That's not what the OP wanted to convey. They want to try and convey misinformation as something true IMO.

Variants of high consequence is a different kind of thing apparently.

Possible attributes of a variant of high consequence:

• Evidence to suggest a significant reduction in vaccine effectiveness, a disproportionately high number of vaccine breakthrough cases, or very low vaccine-induced protection against severe disease.

I believe that's correct. It's an extra level of analysis that they don't always do.
