You've said it well, but i think it's beyond religion and authority mixing - it's authority period. Mankind is driven for power, not for mercy nor goodness; when we put people in charge of us it inevitably goes wrong.
I know you Catholics have had a lot of issues to deal with in terms of sex scandals,corruption, etc.
It's because mankind deals with a lot of issues. We are flawed.
