    Default Suicide Trend

I think this makes three high-profile, college athlete female suicides this year. I hope my count is off.

With most things it's hard to know if it's just normal news making it to my screen or if it's something that is a trend and affecting more young people.

I think it's been a continuing trend and I blame smart phones and social media. Please convince me I'm wrong about that.

Since the beginning of March, three high-profile college student-athletes have died by suicide across the United States. On their fields of play, the three young women projected indestructibility: Katie Meyer as a star goalkeeper on Stanford’s soccer team; Sarah Shulze as a top runner for the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and Lauren Bernett as a standout softball player for James Madison University.

Five NCAA student-athletes in less than two months have died by suicide....
For Katie Meyer. For Jayden Hill. For Robert Martin. For Sarah Shulze. For Lauren Bernett.

Why would you blame smart phones and social media? Legit question.

Really hard to speculate without knowing the individual reasons, if any, behind them.

I have little faith the situation will be treated with any real seriousness outside sensationalism/politicization by the MSM and whatever minority groups feel they can claim being affected.

A LOT of stress on student athletes. Mental and physical. The higher level of play, the higher level of stress.

Hard to know, but Title IX has had an impact, though one would hope not the overriding cause.

How would Title IX come into play?

The dollar issue has always been there. I get that. Part of the stress I mentioned. sports product endorsements and lucrative pro contracts come at a high price mentally/emotionally and physically. Perform at a 110% level above everyone else but don't get hurt. A powder keg all unto itself.

Females also tend to internalize and blame themselves. Males don't tend to do that.

One of my first thoughts was the trans issue. I can definitely see that. Add competing against men to the aforementioned stress. I didn't mention it because it isn't mentioned. Definitely concur that if it is a factor, it could be the one that pushes someone over the top.

It's hard to say for someone who has never been in the situation. There are countless factors involved in suicide. I'm not suicidal so cannot personally relate to thinking that way.

I can't speak to Title IX implications as I haven't heard of any studies that speak to that particular trend... if it is one.

A LOT of stress on student athletes. Mental and physical. The higher level of play, the higher level of stress.
A new study found that teenagers are increasingly depressed, feel hopeless and are more likely to consider suicide. Researchers found a sudden increase in teens' symptoms of depression, suicide risk factors and suicide rates in 2012 — around the time when smartphones became popular, says Jean Twenge, one of the authors of the study.
    https://www.npr.org/2017/12/17/57144...and-depression

A study shows that suicide rates among teenagers have risen along with their ownership of smartphones and use of social media, suggesting a disturbing link between technology and teen self-harm.

I was thinking about the more general trend of teen suicides and the link to smartphones and not athletes specifically. And I know that each reason is specific to the individual but I don't think the trend can be ignored. And if it is a causal link then how do you put the genie back in the bottle.

People can rail about guns but they'll put a smartphone in their kid's hands that lead to increased levels of depression and suicide and higher rates of death than gun violence. Smartphones are evil.

I can agree with that. IMO, too much information. A lot of it is bad/wrong, and the only filter is whatever the MSM and/or left deem good and bad. Without a solid base to bounce everything off of, typical teenagers are going to go with what "everyone else thinks".

Not sure how old you are, but when I was 13, I didn't have to try and figure out what gender I was. Damned sure didn't have to try and figure out the gender of the cute little girl a few duplexes down. We learned right and wrong from our parents and/or church, not some shlub that can spell well enough to have a social media accounts and "followers". We had books. You went to the library for info beyond what was available at home. Not google.

Goes on and on. The pressure of being a teen sucks on a good day. Now, instead of the "basic World" ending at the next block, it has no boundaries and millions of voices telling them what to think, and it's generally the blabbermouth leftwingnuts doing all the talking.

One of the most noticeable things to me is, just how f-d up and wrong is it, or does it have to be that person(s) actively try to push on children they are not the gender that is clearly represented at crotch level? The people doing it should be shot. Few of the true victims will ever be able to overcome that crap.

Can you imagine being a teen trying to live up to all the rules and regs of "woke-ism"? One wrong move and you aren't "dox'd" on the block, or city or whatever. You're screwed on the internet forever. The Southern Baptist Church is more forgiving.

Society used to protect our children. Anymore -- even as far back as when my children were young -- I was trying to protect my children FROM society. They are being taught all the wrong things. Add teenage hormones and you've got a recipe for disaster.

I'm sure someone else explains it better
