Sad thing is, seems we're living a slow-motion, low-budget tv mishmash of 1984, Fahrenheit 357(?) brave new world, Logan's run, and a few other sci-fi stories.

One of the things that amazes me though that seems to play out through all those kinds of books ,
and seems the most consistent with reality, is the compliance and\or outright embrace of much of society with whatever the dominant oppression or horror is.

The main characters usually find themselves struggling against, not just the crazy system, but the majority of people who go along with it.
Out of fear, ignorance, being deceived, personal security or gain, blind obedience or some weird near religious devotion
.
It's that kind of book. Not what I would expect from Stephen King. If I was to try and pin it to a genre, I would say Orwellian, futuristic sci-fi. The futuristic part being already partly upon us at this point. The book was written in the 80s-ish or earlier (not sure on date).

The movie simplifies the "bad guy", and creates a cartoonish action-adventure for Arnold to flex in.
