More movies I've seen!

These are some of the movies I've seen in the past month or so...

Crash - Awesome flick that won an Oscar. Just a story about quite a few lives in LA and how each one is affected by the other. Quite a few good actors/actresses: Sandra Bullock, Tony Danza, Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser, Ryan Phillipe

A history of violence - Viggo Mortensen is outstanding in this flick about a seemingly normal guy in the midwest who instantly becomes a celebrity when he saves a waitress from a hoodlum. It's then found out that others believe he is an ex hitman from the mafia.

Brick - Weird story about HS kids, a gang of kids who sell drugs, a dead chick and the search for the truth. Good movie.

Deadwood Park - I had to see this when I read about it. I'm sorry I did, it sucked badly!

Hostel & Hostel 2 - Both movies are very disturbing and disgusting. Two thumbs up for both! Excellent story if you enjoy a good foreign horror flick!

Knocked Up - Absolutely hilarious, and Katherine Heigl is a hotty! A fat stoner has a one night stand with her when they are drunk and she couldn't get rid of him quick enough in the morning when she realizes the mistake she made. Too bad she got knocked up!

License to Wed - Robin Williams is good in this. A cute love story with lots of laughter from Williams and his little sidekick who is a fat kid who is about 12 years old.

Paycheck - Ben Affleck is actually pretty damn good in this. He gets paid top dollar as a scientist to be locked away on projects for months at a time, only to have the company wipe his memory after each project to protect themselves. Then they ask him to take on a 3 year project for 90 million dollars so long as he agrees to give up 3 years of his life. Lots of good twists and turns in this one.

Tigerland - Colin Farrell is in basic training getting ready to go to Vietnam in '72. He's not really into it though and is more interested in causing trouble for his superiors. Then they have to go to the final week in "Tigerland", which is the closest re-creation of Vietnam without going there.

American Gangster - Denzel Washington is a big time drug dealer in Harlem who has it all. Russel Crowe is a cop working to be a lawyer who is on a search for the drug kingpins. True story, and an excellent must see film!

Mr. Brooks - I'm not a big fan of Kevin Costner but he did a fantastic job with his character in this flick. He's a well respected businessman in his town and quite wealthy, but he has a little addiction - killing people. Awesome flick!

Shattered aka Butterfly on a Wheel - Pierce Brosnan, Maria Bello & Gerard Butler. Another great flick. Pierce Brosnan plays a somewhat of a psycho who is going out of his way to completely destroy the family of the other 2 and everything they ever worked for. What is his motive and his ultimate goal is what keeps you glued to your seat. Another great storyline and great acting.

Haven't seen Tigerland but was curious about it as I went to Tigerland. It was an 8 week course in advanced infantry training to prepare troops for Vietnam. You went there after basic training as part of an advanced course in combat. Sounds like hollywood got it all wrong again. Thanks for the heads up, I won't bother with it now.

I liked this a lot, had quite a few cool moments.

I liked this. Imagine that!

This was really funny, Seth Rogen is great. You should watch Superbad, it's funny, too.

So ,what is the appeal of these movies? I never watch movies like these. I saw 1408, and I enjoyed being on the edge of my seat from the suspense and the fear of what would happen next to John Cusack. But these movies give you a different, disturbing feeling, no?

Good horror movies are real hard to find. They keep churning out the dumb slasher movies which all have the same plot. And the bad guy gets carried over to the many sequels.

So true. In my daughter's group of friends, she and one other girl are the only ones who don't like these movies. Everyone else, male and female, does. Perhaps there is a element of "cool" about watching it?
Yet, they all watched the original House on Haunted Hill at our house, and loved it. No gore, no slashers, no torture, just a good old-fashioned scary movie.

The real HOHH is a bona fide classic Willim Castle horror movie of it's era (1959). Complete with Vincent Price. It's not going to knock your socks off with special effects, so it's a type of film you either appreciate or you don't, I guess.

The remake was an abomination. You did well to miss it.

1408 was excellent. In fact, I think Cusack deserves a nomination for it.

Forget the awful, senseless remake, the original 'The House On Haunted Hill' is one of the most entertaining and enjoyable chillers of all time. William Castle's over the top camp style is an acquired taste for many, but once you enter into the spirit of things you're in for a wild, fun ride. The legendary Vincent Price is in his element here as the cynical millionaire trapped in a loveless sham of a marriage, and Carol Ohmart, who I have only ever seen in the cult classic 'Spiderbaby', is a knockout as his tough as nails "better half". Their haunted house party guests, led by the much loved character actor Elisha Cook, Jr ('The Maltese Falcon' ,The Killing',etc.etc.), are well cast and amusing, and the whole thing is a hoot! I recommend this movie to all horror fans. It is quite possibly the single most entertaining horror thriller of the 50s. Supremely silly but still scary at the same time. Great stuff!

The only one I saw on Jims list is Crash. To me it goes in the category of "film" not movie. My wife and I laugh about this all the time. She digs films and some movies. Me, I just like movies. Films as you said are disturbing to me, movies entertain me. JMHO

I'm definitely over the whole "torture porn" genre, but I can see where some of these types of movies have their merits. The first Hostel was very uniquely paced in that the first 45 minutes was basically nothing but partying and boobs and whatnot, to the extent that you completely forget that you're watching a horror movie, then once the horror begins, it's very shocking.

In addition, there's a little bit about the nature of revenge in there. SPOILERS AHEAD....

We see these kids get tortured and killed, and then the one that gets away sees the torturer on a train. When he confronts him, he attacks him in just as violent and horrifying a manner as the torturer attacked him and his friends. So, we see the kid get revenge, but there is no comeuppance to it. It's basically the same point Kill Bill made, only done a lot more bluntly and obviously.

As for the rest of these movies, they're pretty terrible (what I've seen of them anyway). These types of movies aren't anything new, though, this type of thing started in the 70's with movies like Last House on the Left and I Spit on Your Grave.

Two very good movies.

But jimmy, (and this goes for everyone else) you guys HAVE to see Marie Antoinette. Rent it this weekend if you can! The direction, music, and acting is amazing. Most people look at it as a "chick flick", but its the first "chick flick" that men can really like.

Watch the first 2 minutes of this segment. Notice the transition in traditionalism of the crowning, but then the BURST of new age music by The Cure in that 1700's atmosphere. It's so good.
