    Default Looking for a new job…at 50+

I keep hitting the over 50 year old wall. It parallels being a kid with no work experience. The old 'you have no experience' has turned into 'you have too much experience', even in a different field.

Anyone else had that happen? How did you get by it?

I keep hearing older folks are sot after because of their work ethic and dependability, and knowledge but I haven’t found that to be true, yet.

That sucks. Kids have no recourse, where as if a company refuses you a position because of your age (applies to over 40) that would be illegal discrimination via title VII. Good luck proving it though! LOL

I’d never try to prove it and yes it is illegal. They don’t come out and say it, it’s just understood I guess. Heck I think Home depot does it..They don’t ask age, but they ask if you were ever in the service, if so when?…now duh! that gives them a good idea of how old you are and they never contact you.

Anything..Not something I'd need special training or education in for sure..But anything that I can do with my background..Many skills transfer from on profession to another, but it's tough to convince folks that if I could manage a jet aircraft, people, and all that goes with that job, I can damn sure manage less demanding chit.

It's always worth a try, everybody has something somebody needs, it's just a matter of putting the two together, easier said than done otherwise everyone would be doing it, but if you don't give it a go you will always wonder what if.Go for it MrP.

gets harder all the time to crack the age barrier. Been fighting that since I was 40. It's illegal to discriminate but its done all the time. Like you said they can check for military time and determine how old you are.

I turn 60 this month. Can't even get a security company to call me back when I put in an application. Since my open heart surgery a few years ago I am kinda limited in what I can physically do. so been looking into security jobs that just require sitting there and being bored. with low pay. No dice there, even though I never mention the surgery.

I'm waiting it out right now as I am eligible for a VA pension due to the heart problem. But that will be another 4 or 5 months before it begins.

If I had a dime for every time I was told I was over qualified I would be rich now and not having to work or way on a pension.
When I die I'm sure to go to heaven, cause I spent my time in hell.

You get more with a kind word and a two by four, than you do with just a kind word.

Mr. P, you just need to explain to them that you are worth two twenty-five year olds.

“… the greatest detractor from high performance is fear: fear that you are not prepared, fear that you are in over your head, fear that you are not worthy, and ultimately, fear of failure. If you can eliminate that fear—not through arrogance or just wishing difficulties away, but through hard work and preparation—you will put yourself in an incredibly powerful position to take on the challenges you face" - Pete Carroll.
