When some TV or radio personality says something that offends a lot of people, people put pressure on the advertisers to boycott their products if they don't pull their advertising support of that personality and his program. The advertisers, in turn, may put pressure on the TV/radio station by pulling their advertising business. The TV/radio station, in turn, may cancel the show and fire the personality to protect the bottom line.
It's as American as apple pie, and it's a tactic that even conservtives have resorted to.
