Snow fell in the San Bernardino Mountains, thunderstorms unleashed downpours and hail, and heavy surf was building along the coast Thursday as Southern California moved from a spring heat wave into blustery, rainy weather.

The overnight snowfall in the mountain resort region northeast of Los Angeles coated some peaks but melted quickly at lower elevations.

“It’s bizarre,” Snow Valley ski resort marketing supervisor Roger Vieau told KABC-TV. “It’s very late in the spring for this to be happening. I don’t ever remember it snowing this late in the season.”

In Central California, a National Weather Service surf advisory was in effect for wind-driven 10- to 14-foot waves, with some local sets to 18 feet along the coast of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.
