9. Don't Alter Or Modify Your Gun, And Have Guns Serviced Regularly
10. Learn The Mechanical And Handling Characteristics Of The Firearm You Are Using

Granted, 2 & 7 do not apply when your using a weapon for self defense. However, in general, these are good rules to follow in most situations.
