Russia threatens nuclear escalation in the Baltics if Sweden and Finland join NATO
On Thursday, the Russian Deputy Chief of the Security Council and former president Dmitry Medvedev said "there can be no talk of non-nuclear status for the Baltic" in case Finland and Sweden decide to become members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Both countries have expressed their intention to join the Alliance following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

LONDON, April 14 (Reuters) - One of Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest allies warned NATO on Thursday that if Sweden and Finland joined the U.S.-led military alliance then Russia would deploy nuclear weapons and hypersonic missiles in a European exclave.
Finland, which shares a 1,300-km (810-mile) border with Russia, and Sweden are considering joining the NATO alliance. Finland will decide in the next few weeks, Prime Minister Sanna Marin said on Wednesday

Russia has become too flippant with their comments about using nuclear weapons. A shame that he can't be given a reminder - that threats often become too much to overlook. Will he actually use them? That's a damn good question.

His actions and own rhetoric tell me that you're right, he is insane.

With the amount of time since the last nuclear weapon was used, it's very hard for most to even imagine such a weapon being used today.

Perhaps one won't be used. But perhaps something smaller and more concentrated, but strong enough for the enemy to call it a day, within a day.

    -

But in today's world, what would happen if someone used such a weapon?

For example, what if Russia did just that, and they used a tactical nuke against Ukraine. What do you think the responses would be from around the world?

    ---

(CNN) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN Friday that “all of the countries of the world” should be prepared for the possibility that Russian President Vladimir Putin could use tactical nuclear weapons in his war on Ukraine.

Zelensky told CNN’s Jake Tapper in an exclusive interview from the office of the president in Kyiv on Friday that Putin could turn to either nuclear or chemical weapons because he does not value the lives of the people of Ukraine.

“Not only me – all of the world, all of the countries have to be worried because it can be not real information, but it can be truth,” Zelensky said, switching into English to emphasize his point.

“Chemical weapons, they should do it, they could do it, for them the life of the people, nothing. That’s why,” Zelensky said. “We should think not be afraid, not be afraid but be ready. But that is not a question for Ukraine, not only for Ukraine but for all the world, I think.”

In the wide-ranging interview, Zelensky spoke about the sinking of a Russian ship, the casualties his military has taken and the emotional toll the war is having on him and his people.

Zelensky has remained in Ukraine throughout the 50-day war with Russia, as Ukraine’s forces have resisted the Kremlin’s attempts to seize Kyiv and forced Russia to refocus its war efforts on the eastern and southern regions of the country, where Ukraine is anticipating a significant escalation in fighting in the days to come. At the same time, Russia is firing cruise missiles into the outskirts of Kyiv and still maintains the ability to target Ukraine’s capital with long-range weaponry.

US officials have warned about the possibility that Putin, if backed into a corner, could turn to the use of tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine. CIA Director Bill Burns said Thursday that the CIA watches “very intently” over the possibility, while emphasizing that the US has not yet seen any signs that Russia is preparing to take such a step.

“Given the potential desperation of President Putin and the Russian leadership, given the setbacks that they’ve faced so far militarily, none of us can take lightly the threat posed by a potential resort to tactical nuclear weapons or low yield nuclear weapons,” he said in public remarks at Georgia Tech.

Would the 2 in the middle be under UN auspices that were signed off on by Russia on the UN Security Council? If not all of them? Regardless, none of those has resulted in annexation and only those 2 arguably on the border.

I was referring to his insane comments.

Possessing nuclear weapons and such is one thing - "threatening" or hinting of their use is another ballgame. Similar to if and when the little nightmare in North Korea has a bad day and starts tossing threats.

But, but... It's not imperialism when we do it.
re: Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan see others above AND fil-in-the-blank South American country

(we've got good reason, the small countries we attack were real "threats!" or really bad.)

anyone who thinks we've done ANY wrong simply Hates America.

There's GOOD moral & VITAL safety reasons for EVERYTHING the U.S has ever done.
But on a few minor occasions the U.S. has made a mistake or 2.
Which everyone should ignore and we should never give an account for because we're basically good.
While we hold every other country to the far higher standards.
And never forget thier wrongs, and assume the worse part of their histories are what really defines them.
I mean Russia has always wanted to rule Eurasia, so we have to assume the worse.
But We are the good guys, who bravely threw off monarchy, created a great Republic & who saved the world in WW2 and preserved democracy. That's ALL we've ever been and the basis for all we do.
That's just clear and objective thinking.

    A few actual facts:

Putin has nukes and a disregard for human life. Nothing is going to end with Putin using tactical nukes unless the World is going to be Putin's bitches. Since that's nt likely to happen, Putin using tactical nukes will lead to escalation.

Nobody survives global thermonuclear war. Some may survive the initial blasts. The elite and paranoid will no doubt be hiding in their bunkers they will never be able in their lifetimes to leave.

What the explosions and radiation don't kill right off, nuclear winter will. Humans cannot survive nuclear winter, nor can they outlive it.

Putin is/was stupid to threaten the use of nukes. In a long list of stupid Putin moves. That compels him to prove he will if his demands are not met. He paints himself into corners with his mouth almost as much as Trump.
