I've seen it happen... sometimes parents give less of a rip about the relationship then the child does. The first time a child does something the parent doesn't approve of, the parent stops trying.

It's a foreign concept to me, but I've witnessed it happen.

You're right though, there's all sorts of resentment pent up and waiting to destroy shit if the child still cares about their parents.
