Concord bans sale of plastic water bottles

    By Associated Press
    Thursday, April 26, 2012

CONCORD -- Residents of the historic Massachusetts town of Concord have voted to ban the sale of single-serve plastic water bottles at local stores.

The ban on sales of bottles of a liter or less passed at Wednesday’s town meeting 403-364.

Supporters say it’s the most sweeping water bottle ban passed by any municipality in the nation and will cut down on pollution and limit exposure to toxic chemicals.

Opponents say singling out one form of plastic is ridiculous and the ban will harm local businesses. Opponents also point out that recycled plastic bottles can be used to make dozens of useful items.

Stores could be fined up to $50 for violating the ban.

The ban is scheduled to take effect Jan. 1, pending approval from the state attorney general’s office.
    Just a minute.

    (scratching head)

I thought that the reason people STARTED to buy water in small plastic bottles was to cut down on pollution and limit exposure to toxic chemicals???

I clearly remember the screams from years ago, of people insisting that our tap water was loaded with minerals, chemicals, pollutants, you name it, and this was the SOLE reason why the water-in-small-plastic-bottles industry got started and grew to the size it is today.

Now they're BANNING water in small plastic bottles because it forms too many pollutants, toxic chemicals, .........

    (sigh) I'm SO confused.

Giving the impression that you are do-gooder is way more important than actually doing something good. Easier too.

PEOPLE started buying water in bottles to avoid pollution (theoretically) the GOVERNMENT didn't insist that you do so. Now the GOVERNMENT is trying to limit pollution. No need for confusion.

Umm, no. It's the PEOPLE OF THE TOWN of Concord, who voted en masse to ban these things. See the article.

    No need for confusion.
There's never a NEED for confusion. So why do these fruitcakes keep supplying so much? >:-O

I saw the article, they are busy bodies, 403 of them, who want to use the power of government to force behavior. Now if you can relate how the PEOPLE OF THE TOWN of Concord were instrumental in kicking off the bottled water industry then you might have something.

You just capped the wrong words in your post.

The perfect solution is to sell water in bottles made of ice. I have no idea why this hasn't been done already.

I look for the supermarkets/convenience stores to start selling canned water in Concord. After all they get the scrap value of the cans. The consumer pays five cents deposit, the store refunds the five cent deposit and gets to sell the cans for scrap. As Limbaugh likes to say, "Follow the money."
