Default China, Taiwan protest fatal shooting of fisherman by Philippines

    http://www.latimes.com/news/world/wo...,6519727.story

Beijing and Taipei united in their condemnation of the Philippines on Friday for the shooting death of a Taiwanese fisherman in disputed waters.

The killing of Hung Shih-cheng, 65, injects a volatile new element in ongoing conflicts over the South China Sea, where fishermen and authorities from competing nations often play dangerous games of chicken at sea.

Philippine authorities admitted that one of their coast guard ships opened fire Thursday on the victim's Taiwanese vessel, but said they had done so to prevent their own boat from being rammed and only intended to disable the engine.

"The ramming of the boat into our vessel was certainly an aggressive act so the [coast guard] responded accordingly," said deputy presidential spokeswoman Abigail Valte at a press conference on Friday.

I guess if your navy is too weak to send a powerful message to the Peoples Republic of China's navy, you can try to send a powerful message to them through a 65 year-old Taiwanese fisherman.

More bungling by the Filipinos at the expense of the Chinese. Last time they resolved a hostage situation involving tourists from Hong Kong by killing the hostages.
Mama Jeffro: Jeeeeh-froooo! What's going on down there? What's that smell?
Jeffro: Nothing ma! Me and Lorenzo are practicing our Turkish oil wrestling.

Told you people China plans on just taking the Philippines. They are just building a case with crap like this happening.
We should consider how the Chinese fishing boats just waltz right on into Philippines waters to overfish for certain fish .. That fact will be ignored and rarely reported because even America goes along with China's deceptive practices. Obama is in their pocket . Russia's too, remember how he told those Ruskies to just hang on he would have more power/leeway after the election.. -

heh, but you know the Filipinos as well as I do. They just ride up to shake down foreign fishermen for a handout.

    It's the Pinoy way.

Whatever happened here I don't know. But seriously doubt a Taiwanese fisherman tried to ram them.

South China Sea tension mounts near Filipino shipwreck

    By Manuel Mogato
MANILA (Reuters) - A wrecked navy transport ship perched on a remote coral reef could be the next flashpoint in the South China Sea, where China and five other claimants bitterly dispute territory.
The Philippines is accusing China of encroachment after three Chinese ships, including a naval frigate, converged just 5 nautical miles from an old transport ship that Manila ran aground on a reef in 1999 to mark its territory.
Philippine officials say they fear the Chinese ships will block supplies to about a dozen Filipino marines stationed in abject conditions on the rusting ship, raising tensions over one of Asia's biggest security issues.
The area, known as Second Thomas Shoal, is a strategic gateway to Reed Bank, believed to be rich in oil and natural gas. In 2010, Manila awarded an Anglo-Filipino consortium a license to explore for gas on Reed Bank but drilling stalled last year due to the presence of Chinese ships.
Manila says Reed Bank, about 80 nautical miles west of Palawan island at the southwestern end of the Philippine archipelago, is within the country's 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone.
Beijing says it is part of the Spratlys, a group of 250 uninhabitable islets spread over 165,000 square miles, claimed entirely by China, Taiwan and Vietnam and in part by Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines.
"China should pull out of the area because under international law, they do not have the right to be there," said Raul Hernandez, a spokesman for the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, noting the area's proximity to Palawan, the country's largest province. He said the Chinese ships were a "provocation and illegal presence".
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said on Tuesday the Second Thomas Shoal was part of the Spratly Islands, over which China had "indisputable sovereignty".

Tyr. Oddly enough. That story reminded me of General MacArthur during the Second World War.

Those who know little, if anything about our History are now....DOOMED to repeat it.

Not a joke. Put nothing past the Chinese, as the General once told President Harry S. Truman....
    before Truman FIRED HIM.

Absolute worse thing Trumann ever did was not back MacArthur. Had he backed MacArthur countless thousands of American lives would have been saved (Vietnam war would never happened ).. We had nukes and we should have used one or two on them. Trumann should rot in hell for not defending this nation as that was his primary job. After WW2 several presidents miused and abused our military. Hell, it became a ritual to do so. Look at what a high level obama has brought it up to now . At least the others were not traitors doimng so. As Obama absolutely is....--Tyr
