    Former Congressman Howard Coble
died late Tuesday night after an extended hospitalization. He was 84.

Coble, of Greensboro, is a former U.S. Representative for North Carolina's 6th congressional district, serving from 1985 to 2015.

He was succeeded by Mark Walker.

Representative Coble, a Korean War Veteran, served on active duty with the United Stated Coast Guard for 5 ½ years. He then served 18 years with the Coast Guard Reserve. His last reserve assignment was as Commanding Officer, USCG Reserve Unit, Wilmington, NC. He retired from the Coast Guard Reserve as a captain (O-6).

Coble said he benefited from his years with the service,

The Coast Guard did more for me than I did for the Coast Guard

I did not have the honor to personally serve with the man, but I heard of him thru Reservists that would work the Baltimore area.
