    R. J. Lindley,
    Feb 2nd, 1973
Poetry-- Subject Nature, Wolf, Amerian Indian And Injustice...

Old note: My mother's father was Native American. I gained
great insight into the life of Native Americans from words
he spoke to me. Since his death, I have read many books that
gave even more historical knowledge on the subject. Finding
the ones that did not deliberately cover up the savage acts
carried out by "whites" against Native Americans.

    New Note:
Population history of indigenous peoples of the Americas
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The population figure of indigenous peoples of the Americas before
the 1492 voyage of Christopher Columbus have proven difficult
to establish. Scholars rely on archaeological data and written
records from settlers from Europe. Most scholars writing at
the end of the 19th century estimated that the pre-Columbian
population was as low as 10 million; by the end of the 20th
century most scholars gravitated to a middle estimate of
around 50 million, with some historians arguing for an estimate
of 100 million or more.[1] Contact with the Europeans led to
the European colonization of the Americas, in which millions
of immigrants from Europe eventually settled in the Americas.

The population of African and Eurasian peoples in the Americas
grew steadily, while the indigenous population plummeted. Eurasian
diseases such as influenza, bubonic plague and pneumonic plagues,
yellow fever, smallpox, and malaria devastated the Native Americans,
who did not have immunity to them. Conflict and outright warfare
with Western European newcomers and other American tribes further
reduced populations and disrupted traditional societies. The extent
and causes of the decline have long been a subject of academic debate,
along with its characterization as a genocide.[2]

American Indian, Nightshades, Moonshadows And Howling Wolf

Thirsty for red moon, its sacred beams and eternal pull
    howling-out to speak to this dark and blind world, without fear;
Your echoes enter, soulful bones of insightful red man
birthing growing urges to return and run truly free,
falling upon ancient trails, foraging for lean red meat
race with red-heart's deepest desires into widest abyss,
embrace our mother earth, unified into one body.

Where ancient trails once well-known, rests under dust long fallin'.
Moon's golden realms hear both man and wolf, faithful loud callin'.

Standing proud, atop very high and lonesome mountain crag
    winds caressing one of Nature's most beautiful creatures;
Notes calling loud, that give night's resplendent moon pregnant pause
in that silent and golden moment, where man so trembles,
for it is then knowledge comes, therein sings of true freedom
having no need for dreams of blind men or dark worldly lusts,
speaking to pack below, mirroring its deep felt tones.

Where ancient trails once well-known, rests under dust long fallin'.
Moon's golden realms hear both man and wolf, faithful loud callin'.

Alas! Fate and Fury- rage combine and oft delivers
    soul-crushing, black-handed cuts from darkened realms far below;
Wherein has justice overcame Fate's most savage attacks
when hatred and greed both conspired to not be defeated,
in infliction of war's sorrows and deadly destruction
while parading under banner of Light and compassion,
tales of malevolent beasts, benevolently destroyed!

Where ancient trails once well-known, rests under dust long fallin'.
Moon's golden realms hear both man and wolf, faithful loud callin'.

What Of Famous Warriors, How Should They Be Judged

Can the greatest warriors be as brave as they say
Lives judged by bloody deeds rather than by Love
should not their character reflect far more the man
more than victorious fight, when push came to shove
should brave deeds overshadow each one's mortal span
family Love, all of Life thus far greater weigh?

Dare we set scales that may belittle other facts
Love of all other earthen treasures cast aside
what of dearest children raised to be faithful
one can not stop heroic pride, its rushing tide
fame true earned, by default makes us all grateful
biased judgments given, are oft hard to retract.

Of heroes deaths and its powers to reincarnate
the imagined greatness of dying fighting true
Statues, spears, shields and sabers relics that present
perhaps more praise than savagery should thus accrue
for mixed in was blood-lust we all know was Hell-sent
caught in colors that war paintings so decorate.

Is it right to judge for war victory alone
that the man, only had blood-letting to give
can we rationalize that such is work of Fate
in war, innocent victims had no right to Live
should such men be judged by barbarity and hate
and weight of their deadly deeds thus have to atone?

Can the greatest warriors be as brave as they say
Lives judged by bloody deeds rather than by Love
should not their character reflect far more the man
more than victorious fight, when push came to shove
should brave deeds overshadow each one's mortal span
family Love, all of Life thus far greater weigh?

What Holds More Resplendent Gifts Of The Great And Vast Beyond

Seas of poetry orations, I once took my swims
being strong in spirit, stouter in heart and lithe of limbs
What dread had I of illness or passage of Father Time
when great beauty of verse sang so deep, dancing in its rhyme
Waves of its amber grains, its sandy beach, its great pleasures
stirred heart, pleading soul in immeasurable measures!

If tired, I cast myself upon lands flowing true and fair
seeing magnificence in Earth, Life, Nature- everywhere
Before dawn, before slumber flees this soul's poetry dreams
of paradise shores, poetic thoughts, soft cast golden beams
Winds of change and sublime words to describe and thus to match
castles of hope, beauty's grace and golden eggs- set to hatch!

Fearing not of, high flying fancies and heavenly flights
of lost romantic desires, cast adrift on stormy nights
Or that of abandoned ships left behind in gleaming seas
for poetry gifts its love and blessings of granted pleas
Bountiful harvests of word-seeds so pleasurably sown
are but summer days sending cool winds so gratefully blown!

What holds more resplendent gifts of the great and vast beyond
than poetry, its powers, which poets are so very fond
How its paintings, colors memories one sweetly recalls
of life, living and flames of hot-romance youth often falls
Beyond poetic seas of white-cropped waves and foaming foam
may this old poet's soul, in death, forever gaily roam!

Of Treasures Sought, Diving For Forbidden Dark Pearls

I shall weave you, dear reader, words true and sincere
tho' will not be as great as those woven by poetic peers
It's truth from a life long-lived, too fast and much too wild
in the mad rush of anger, from a heartbroken child
With forlorn hope, crushed soul, and in deep, dark despair
too oft in raging heat, without purpose or will to care!
Wild young fool, hellbent on fighting this evil world
Treasures sought while diving deep, for the shiniest pearl!

Of lost loves, shattered hearts, I've had and suffered many
Yet of sweetest blessings, I have been rewarded plenty
In stark realization, this world has cut me to the bone
Immaturity, a tool used by this fool to self dethrone
And while in total chaos, I started fires I could not quell
for haunting nightmares sent my broken heart into hell!
With agony from lapping flames and deepest regrets
came punishments deserved from what rashness begets!

Her name was Beauty. She lit the stars in heavenly skies
Alluringly ravishing, soft blue, the color of her eyes
She wore a blue mini-skirt that prompted hot desires
so fierce that mere water could not quench passion's fires
In a flash my heart forbade me, words with which to speak
my knees, hard-knocking; my heart faint and then grew weak!
With that confessed, dear reader, my soul was enraptured
by this graceful lady, my heart had thus been captured!

Sad that I should have to convey this sorrowful news
Too soon she was lost to me and I crashed in shades of blues
Such rashness of youth takes a horrific toll of gifts
and within a single heartbeat my life incurred sad shifts
Had my weakness not reared its impatient, ugly head
I would not have fallen, and love would have won instead
Yet, temptation from its darkness of abodes rose up
offering the cup of a far sweeter wine that I would sup!

And in this wicked world, I heard its sworn applause
with swiftness of truth, destroyed was love's great cause
A man thus lost, thus fallen, recalls only his painful aches
and mourning sorrowed cries, "Pity me, for heaven's sake."
Yet, justice turns its blind eye and stirs his aches even more
searing flames blaze, as they relentlessly shut the door!
From such woe-begotten lessons a youth should surely learn
If you lick a raging fire, your tongue will feel the burn!

I weaved for you, dear reader, words true and sincere
tho' will not be as great as those woven by poetic peers
It's truth from a life long-lived too fast and much too wild
in the mad rush of anger, from a heartbroken child
With forlorn hope, crushed soul, and in deep, dark despair
too oft in raging heat, without purpose or will to care!
Wild young fool, lessons taught when lightning bolts hurled
sought useless treasure when the flag of lust was unfurled!

Note: It was with sincere appreciation of her great poetic talent that I
wrote this poem after reading a truly wonderful poem she had composed.
My dear friend, Lin Lane's poem, titled, "Relieve My Heart of its Ache"
gave inspiration, poetic spirit and my muse cause for me to sit and write this piece. I then sent this piece for her to see and telling her of her inspiring poem giving rise to this creation, she graciously responded by offering to edit this poem, a very kind and generous act.
I accepted and am so truly thankful, as now its quality, its flow and its shine have all been immensely increased. I dedicate this poem to my very kind and generous dear friend, Lin Lane.. Posted today as promised after my having delayed posting due to a previous promise I made to another poet and dear friend.

Pray We Our Daily Bread, Christmas, Our Savior Born

    Contest entry:

Pray We Our Daily Bread, Christmas, Our Savior Born

Mighty ghost of Christmas past, thy heart beats
to stir aghast, grievous sorrows of loss.
While we celebrate joys, holiday's treats,
time flies forth, giving such gems not a toss.

Ghostly are memories we oft cherish
to waken our souls to their truest of Lights.
As we pray, God's words shall never perish
we shall recall blind were given new sight!

Pray we our daily bread, our Savior born
gave his Life instead that we live again.
Although world cries and life may seem forlorn
our Lord, our Savior, is our faithful friend.

With dear hopes and sweet dreams, Christmas reminds.
Light embraced, life needs no other rewinds.

Edit (2-23-2019)- Not award a place. This is the fourth time my entry has been give an N/A by this contest sponsor.
I being no fool, have a fairly good judgement of exactly what is going on. Some judges will place even childishly
composed poems over far better poems. I guess they have their reasons but none that exhibit anything close
to fair analysis of verse, or quality appraisal of poetic creation/talent/message evident in the poem submitted.-Tyr

Strong Coffee Ate A Silver Spoon

Strong coffee ate a silver spoon
Blind feline lapped up the spilled milk
Sweet relief cannot come too soon
I slept on sheets of finest silk
Gone such dreams with vanishing moon

Dry toast from molded bread was made
Served with the world's gold gilded lies
    Sides of temptations, well displayed
Seeds of regrets in cherry pies
I, a blind jackass, sorely brayed

Eggs were scrambled while feeling pain
Table sighed, "Why am I left bare?"
    Except for heartache's tenured stain
and foolish pride that placed it there
I hear cries in horrid nightmares

Plum jam scooped from a broken jar
Morn's mirror showed my old hurts
    bludgeoned by love's iron bar
Stove hissed at me, "Your just desserts!"
I deserved each deeply etched scar

Note: Written 16 years ago from today, this was born from me earlier that day, watching children open early Christmas presents, allowed just one each - for the remainder must wait until Christmas morn. As I now look back, and rejoice at having both that precious memory and my having written about it when still young, healthy and full of life.
Christmas Morn A Poem, Two Thousand And Two

Short are the hours until Christmas morn lands
joy joins children in its caroling bands.
Casting brighter rays, snow canvas with shine
one day that we should think not, what is mine.
Happiness flows, we see sweet faces glow
this cheerful day, we oft pray hours pass slow!

As laughter rings, and wrapping paper sings
with kids gleaming smiles and season's good things.
Echoes are cast from wrapping papers torn
all should know, this day our Savior was born.
That man should have more than just life on earth
souls are born from our God and all have worth!

On this Christmas day let us all rejoice!
Pray for love, peace and all, in one true voice!

Note: My last poem for 2018 was dark and tragic. Here my first poem of 2019,
tho' sad, expresses recollections of a beautiful memory of my youth and
the afterthoughts of mistakes made and written verses of hope of forgiveness
from a truly beautiful, kind and remarkably gentle soul, that I once loved.
I hope you may see the depths of regret one feels when they fully comprehend
a fantastic treasure was by wild and youthful folly thus lost.

To Dream This, Love Forgives, When I Call Out Her Name

Your kiss, its memory ambrosia for this lonesome heart
you I so miss, these many decades we have been apart
Your sexy eyes, sent passionate waves into wanting soul
yes we said our goodbyes, but these years alone took a toll
Your grace and beautiful mind, perhaps I miss all the more
time has been unkind, my sorrow was in closing that door!

Pray I, your huge heart forgave, that raving fool I became
and your mercy save, as I now utter your lovely name
Our last dance, sweetest of nights, before our love fell apart
lost romance, greatest tragedy was my breaking your heart
This mercy I beg now, will renew this sad, weak spirit
when I cry your name, if you cry out mine, I will hear it!

    Dancing With Those Depressing Blues

There are times that I do not speak
    spirit low and my body weak;
times that life knocks me all about,
silence helps me figure it out.
There are times grief sends its deep hits
    sorrows cast me into sad fits;
weeks when aching blues loom so large,
and darkness arrives to take charge.
There are times all color is black
    shadows come to spirit attack;
times when heart cries and sinks so low,
joy dies and I just want to go.
There are times, dark days no birds sing
    only way is end everything;
times that life seems lost and so dark,
    life and reality's pain stark.
There are times, that hellish storm wins
    feel numb and can not see my friends;
times hope appears to fly away,
no relief despite prayers I say.
There are times that I do not speak
    spirit low and my body weak;
times that life knocks me all about,
silence helps me figure it out.

I was sent an email message inquiring about this poem yesterday. I could not remember if I had ever presented it here.
In fact, I could not even remember ever writing it-- so I went to my home poetry site, typed in the title and there it was-- copyrighted.
This even further highlights to me my memory loss issues I face.
I am presenting it here now, so excuse me if among my many poems posted here , I have previously done so.
It is a sonnet written in a new sonnet form a dear poet friend created, 2 years ago..

    ************************************************** *************************

NOTE: After reading Carole Duet's beautiful sonnet, I decided to try to write a sonnet using her new sonnet form.
From her poem, Chasing the Moon and Stars, which she describes her new form this way,
"made up my own "meter"/sylllable count per line for this one. It goes like this:
    1st verse is 7,8,9,10; 2nd verse is 9,7,7,9; 3rd verse is 10,9,8,7; and the couplet is 7,7."
Therefore, I dedicate this sonnet to Carole Duet for her inspiration in inspiring me to write this new poem using
    her new sonnet form.

    Midnight Comes, Memories I Embrace
    (Dedication Poem)

    Heart deep, roaring thunder cracks
    waves pulsating with rhythmic aches.
Desiring first, to be back on track
yet too afraid to ever hit the brakes.

    Midnight comes, memories I embrace
not a dream, for you are there.
Awesome smile and your dear angel face
I pray we will our lives share.

When imprisoned down in sad valleys low
    earnest praying for another chance.
With love crying this you should know
true love thrived in our romance.

Heart aching to kiss your lips
    take again Heavenly trips.

Sonnet( A Lost Romance), (Dedicated to Carole Duet),
For inspiring me to write today using her new sonnet form.
Based upon a very sad experience of lost love from my youth..

Tears Falling As Rain, She Left Swearing Never To Return

Seven times, her beautiful hand he had attempted to win
each one failed because she easily saw his greatest flaw
for he reasoned, there is no dishonor, no evil sin
why not just take what one wanted, even if it was all.

She knew greedy desires gave no truce to those sadly afflicted
And eventual destruction was easily predicted

His final try, he pleaded to be a truly changed man
crying loving heart had broken his insanity spell
promising faithfulness and living simple was the plan
after that, he won the lottery and all went to Hell.

She knew greedy desires gave no truce to those sadly afflicted
And eventual destruction was easily predicted

Seven tragic years she stuck it out, praying he would change
look back at what he was losing, finally see the light
stop being a wild cowboy, come in from the open range
and as an honorable man sleep in her bed each night.

She knew greedy desires gave no truce to those sadly afflicted
And eventual destruction was easily predicted

Tears falling as rain, she left swearing never to return
years later his money gone, his life had fallen apart
she asked could she return to help, sincere offer, he spurned
then he drank the poison that exploded his greedy heart.

She knew greedy desires gave no truce to those sadly afflicted
And eventual destruction was easily predicted

Posting two poems in this thread today.
Hope you may enjoy both, as each one is different and
reveals much more about the author than probably is wise to tell. - lol- --Tyr

Slow, The Flow Of Time's Waning Hands

On nights that I can not slow walk
through dreams that may, my sad soul heal
    With such interruption heart balks
at the sorrows I come to feel.

Waning midnight hours race on past
night shadows then appear to prowl
bed writhing, I pray it not last
    useless, as nightmare monsters howl!

Slow, the flow of time's waning hands
their razor claws slashing in deep
Over and over, one last stand
    as Hope promises blessed sleep.

In my sleep I try to fast talk.
From dead body outlined in chalk.

    Plumbing Life's Mysterious Ways

    I.

I've sent my arrows... flying in deep
life and heartache... rivers ran dry
no more this agony... stones for pillows
blessings lost then... re-found dreams that excite
left my home town... dark caverns echoing my return
    everything changed... hope worn well
to deepest sorrows... new chains were found

    II.

to believe is to act... evil wraps warming arms
I take courage and... walk the limbs
the ancient tree... dispels my fallacies
twelve inch nails... buried to the head

gaping holes to escape its wrath.
