The Enlightenment Of A Once Lost Soul,
(A sad tale of life lived, in three sonnets united)....

    I.
Alas! Can man ever conquer such doom and gloom
walk in the light, a true path forswearing to take
does our wicked world ever give us that much room
allowing life's true dignity for goodness sake?

Did not the mighty Greeks beseech their Gods in vain
while living in a vile and epic blinded state
seeking to remove worldly ills and thus maintain
shallow paradise, as only fools can relate?

Lo! This lie our sad and dark world dares repeat
parading its tempting sins as gifted treasures
setting traps, laying golden palaces at our feet
giving us falsified glory beyond measure.

Of this, we eat dessert with its poison hidden.
Blinded by desires, lusts, wickedness forbidden.

    II.
Another bite of courage perhaps 'tis my last
would it suffice, only time's truth will ever tell
darkness swirled, its heartaches returning from my past
in that suffocation was born another hell.

Could life and fantastic hope this curse serve to break
would any amount of valor serve to dismiss
when all of my honor it has forsworn to take
as scurrilous hands crush love's magnificent bliss?

Another bite, a heaping helping of regret
what little remained of bravado and elan
gamble on love, upon life, you take what you get
you pay the Pied Piper, learn to live with the pain.

What serves man greater than serenity's sweet peace?
Certainly not the red-blood of war's dark release!

    III.
In yet another realm, the old poet rejoiced
his pen its resounding victories did so ink
those dear certitudes of romantic gems he voiced
as in gasping compilations of wit, he sinks.

In dawn-glory and day's promise, he often dwelt
making corrections of accursed nightmares born
baring heart and soul, deep heartbreaking pains he felt
admitting his past follies that his life has torn.

With ink and paper bright new castles he erects
not as fantasy he believes but as hope's touch
set up as an eternal quest to self-reflect
pray its aggrandizements to be not too much!

Pity that past hopes and dreams we can not remake
And as well fulfill those vows we too oft forsake!

Robert J. Lindley, original July 2014,
    edit 2017, 10-16-2020....

    Note (1.):
Each of the 3 sonnets is exactly per sonnet
    Syllables per line:
    0 12 12 12 12 0 12 12 12 12 0 12 12 12 12 0 12 12
    Total number of syllables:168
    Total number of words:116

    Total syllables= 504
    Total words= 348

    Note (2.)
This very revealing piece was written originally
as a private poem intended for my children to read
after my mortal passing. It was left as a fragment
until I started to compose the third sonnet yesterday
and was able to finish it today. Present it today.

**We are oft no more than blink of the eye
our time a mere wisp, of mark set to die
yet we may think better if we but try
and live to reach well beyond earth and sky**...

The Deep Darkness, The Hope, Words Sent To Plead

I am lost, wicked world grants no reprieve
Castle of darkness, black-cast to deceive
Towers staggering in the boiling mist
I that dare to shake my angry left fist
From the deep chasm, life is set to perish
Within fated storm lies all I cherish
Night- born horrors seem to forever last
I pray peace, such that was lost in the past.

The cold black ocean, its cavernous mouth
Winter's icy cold that sends life down South
No sanctuary, no joy to be had
Life and sorrows, seems all of it is bad.

Tomorrow, tomorrow, will it bright shine.
Allowing happy days on which to dine?

Gold Within The Ink May Heart's Depths Relay

The gold within the ink, it truly glows
As golden afternoon sun slowly sinks,
Night arrives to gift its many shows
As midnight owl its eyes rapidly blinks.
The prancing moon its soft beams splatters
O' the washing tides sing and play along
    Writing poetic verses such matters,
As does the music to romantic songs.
Take pride in verses sweetly splashed
From within the surging tides of one's soul,
Be they born of life, sorrows rehashed
Or rejoicing in attaining one's goal!

Gold within the ink may heart's depths relay
Truth of the soul that so sincerely prays.

In Garden Of Dreams, As Dawn Awakens

Dare I live with love and thus take Heavenly flight
To sup away nectar of a cool summer night
All is not so, not as it so appears
Dare I dream it so through my falling tears?

Alas! She that feasted here has now fled
Leaving behind a heart so deeply bled
A love refusing to curse her and quit
I drink that sweet nectar cup- all of it.

In garden of dreams as dawn awakens
Dwells she that was so far away taken
Dare I, to her soft calls in haste thus go
Into paradise where her love winds blow?

Dare I live with love and thus take Heavenly flight
To sup away nectar of a cool summer night?

Sonnet Triples, Poet And Time's Thoughtful Musings

    (1.)
The Sonnet And The Poetic Query

Playing on the crescent hill, moonglow dances,
    And dying mouse took its usual chances;
And wise owl sleeps off the night's happy meal
Life shines with its usual little thrills.
Eternal watchman, winds the chiming clock
Sleep fled -comes every aching tick-tock
As ocean waves eat up low sandy shores
A sad love-sick mermaid, Neptune implores.
On and on goes the rabid churning world
Its mysteries wrapped in hidden curls
Ah but, tis often the glory one seeks
That fails to give but spit and false-set peeks!

Dare high heavens to this old parade change?
Can mortal flesh ever reach such a range?

    R. J. Lindley, June 4th, 1981
Sonnet, ( Wherein Fate , Time And Hope So Oft Collides )

And night its cascading dream-webs spins forth.
Per somnium nocte Cascading telae egressus deducit

    (2.)
She Of Rarest Beauty, Truest Essence Of Love

She walks in the garden where dead roses once grew
That Aphrodite beauty this poor soul once knew
She of precious life, honey -sweet raven hair
O' pray I to loving god - to again be there !

For under gold radiance of coming bright moon
We shall both dance into that deep romantic swoon
In sensual delights, locked in dear loving arms
We both enjoying blessings of passionate charms!

Yes, she is the one that my daydreams have foretold
Soaking in her beauty, on her truth, I am sold
As morn sounds yet more soft whispers of faithful love
Sun shines its blessings, golden rays cast from above!

She walks in the garden where dead roses once grew.
An Aphrodite beauty this poor soul once knew!

    R.J. Lindley, June 9th, 1981
Sonnet, ( Wherein Fate , Time And Hope So Oft Collides )

And under sun's radiant blessings, beauty its fruits offers.
Sol radiantibus sub bona fructus praebet speciem.

    (3.)
Aching And Breaking Into Tender Bone

As Fate points its crooked little finger,
In this true-heart your beauty yet lingers
Aching and breaking into tender bone
A frozen copy of the hardest stone
Are the blues of the darken death singer.

While life dares the old rainbow to vanish
I pray now my dreams can your love banish
Was it not romantic truth you slayed
As with your vanity you love played
Fled to Mexico to love in Spanish.

No more illusion, your magic died
Same night this soul mercilessly cried
A broken victim, saw your wicked lies
And unabashedly let out roaring cries!

I Got Scars, Invisible Chains That Tightly Bind

I got scars, invisible but O' so, so deep
Never say never, heart slashed enough to weep
There the darkness came ravaging a broken mind
I got scars, invisible chains that tightly bind
And an epic loss that can any man destroy
Back when a younger lad, a poor O' Southern boy!

I got scars, invisible but O' so, so deep
Doorways bringing bad nightmares into my sleep
Those battles, those moaning cries can be heard each night
Tragedy, a shame, such a sad pitiful fight
There the darkness comes cutting up both heart and soul
And lord don’t ya know, it is such a wicked toll!

I got scars, invisible but O' so, so deep.
Never say never, heart slashed enough to weep!

Great writing from both the 80's and from this year. Thanks for sharing this, Robert. It has been too long since I've been reading your poetry.

Three sonnets from my new blog, Alas So Shoot Me, I Grieve What Was Lost
    (1.)

Alas! So Shoot Me, I Grieve What Was Lost

Alas! So shoot me, I grieve what was lost

Not just youth, but those things Time took away

Within aching heart comes an icy frost

Covering epic pains of such decay!

One may ask, how dare I so complain?

Does Nature cry about hard falling rain?

Yet does not this world its ills promote well?

Oft with sorrows borne from depths of Hell?

Dare I choose to such dark verses to write?

Have I not truly joined in the fight?

Alas! So shoot me, I grieve what was lost

Not just youth, but those things Time took away

Within aching heart comes an icy frost

Covering epic pains of such decay!

    Robert J. Lindley,

Sonnet, repeat stanza ( with triple couplets )

    ******

    (2.)

Those Lush And Tender, Soft Welcoming Lips

Those flowing curls, glowing luscious mane

Sexy smile, flowering as desert rain

Bountiful beauty, sent to ease heart's pain

Lovely blessing sent for this soul to gain.

Ravishing essence with sweet touch to match

My hesitation, thinking what is the catch

That such a beauty would now my way pass

A goddess, sweet speaking to this poor lass.

Those lush and tender, soft welcoming lips

With true beauty, grace, and curvaceous hips

Yes beauty, as could launch a thousand ships

And greatest king's treasure surely eclipse.

Those tender kisses that were sent both ways.

May we forever - remember that day!

    Robert J. Lindley,

    Sonnet,

( And Life, Its Journey Ever Sped Onward )

    (3.)

Does Basking Moon Ask Strolling Stars For More

Of beauty, earth, wind and soft glowing sky

Dares this artist to weep tears asking why

Heart and soul must pay such a heavy price

And shed blood for it to ever suffice?

Does basking moon ask strolling stars for more

Space and time to heavenly night explore

And cast upon earth a much deeper hue

To inspire such in poets such as you?

Does dawn its resplendent new rays withhold

That gift, that gleaming beauty to be sold

Or Mother Nature fail to gift new birth

Or poets fail to cast beauty's true worth?

Do such quizzing queries set well in verse

Or fail as being dated and quite terse?

    Robert J. Lindley,

    Sonnet,

( And what of life, love and this thing we call earth ? )

Woeful Cries From A Cavern Dark And Deep

Hungry winds, that lash to whip up desire
horrid- state of loss, feeling all alone
forgotten, flames of great funeral pyres
those altars carved from unwilling stone.
Youth's folly, innocence, its childlike mirth
    life wandering through unforgiving sea
lust and greed, far, far greater than earth's girth
fruits thus harvested from a poison tree.

Vanity and its allies- mortal fools
world- a rock-field to be seeded with pain
humanity clawing with its dark tools
    leaving behind destruction, blacken stains.

Red, constant flow of savagely spilt blood
Man in blindness wading through epic floods.

Inspiration, Revelation, Adaptation, Within Poetic Verse

    Sonnet I

I saw morn's soft hands stretching to touch bright moonlight
Tis but a fleeting blink betwixt man's death and birth
Dark unknowing is why we so oft fear the night
In that abject blindness, fail to see life's true worth
Alas! Such are sorrows of mankind's constant plight
    That feeds malignant swellings of darkness on earth;
Those of ancient times, of distant long dead yesterdays
Will one day from that deepest of slumbers arise
Long hidden from flown days and nights, world's weeping grays
Be reborn with no thoughts of world's previous lies.
As earth spins, sounding its constant evolving beats
We blind to light's truth, continue our foolish acts
Racing onward counting our coins and useless feats
Life came from light's truth, not so-called man-made facts.

    Sonnet II

I that thought to profit, see beyond mortal veil
Having never measured truest rectitude of life
In my epic quest, the highest of mountains scale
In youth, blind to sad flowing storms of mortal strife
Alas! We that in our darkness refuse to see
Oft face raging storms that seem to forever swirl
Not realizing, Love's blessings are given free
To counter lightning bolts world's malevolence hurls.
I that foolishly thought to defeat that we die
Later learned truth that our vanity denies
We are lost because we believe world's greatest lie
That we were once roaming beasts beneath earthen skies
By our own greatness became gods of divine might
Free to do as we please, revel in our delights.

    Sonnet III

In June, when wondering winds our hearts so lighten
I have found eager bubbling brooks streaming along
Summer's morn setting up to day gaily brighten
Nature gifting beauty, songbirds gifting sweet song
Across flowering meadows, busy bees flying
Life many treasures so beautifully sharing
Time to live, not sadly ponder mortal dying
For truest of joy depends on our loving caring
There rests much more happiness in sincere kindness
And sweeter breath within Love's soft touch inspiring
Eyes to truly see, welcome defeat of blindness
Rather than worldly conflicts and daily sparring
To satisfy our fleshly dreams and dark desires
Lets embrace light's divine truth that never expires.

Often When I Must Take A Sad Look Back

Look back remembering how hard I wept
Seeing decay of where we both once slept
You were beauty and hand full of treasure
Then our new-sprung love grew beyond measure.

Now even sad memories are of gold
Back then I was vibrant, steady and bold
You full of grace and a true beauty queen
How I long to again live in that scene!

Very often, I wonder where you are at
Are you wearing tight jeans and floppy hat
Or a mini-skirt and those mile high heels
Love lost, do you truly know how that feels?

Look back remembering how hard I wept.
Seeing emptiness where we both once slept.

    Robert J. Lindley, 8-02-2021
Sonnet- ( When Hard Reality Hits A Very Sad Road )

    Note:
Truth in Life: some things burn an unforgettable
Imprint upon spirit, heart, mind and soul.
Of those - lost love ranks as the top calamity,
yet it is one of the very greatest life learners
out there. Surviving it sears a strength that
penetrates into the marrows and strengthens
the soul. Although many would rather be
weak- and still have that love.
For something that sweet and powerful is
    indeed an epic loss..

Sprinkled Stardust In Her Long Flowing Hair

In bright moonlight I saw her standing there
Sprinkled stardust in her long flowing hair
She looked just like an angel to me
If only this country-boy she could see
Looking for love and a heart bold and true
And happiness, with a future with you
'neath canopy of glittering sweet stars
She would be my Venus, I her strong Mars.

Wonder what would love be without her hand
Could I truly live, could I even stand
And earth could it a greater treasure gift
Than her sight, her soft touch that so uplifts.

In bright moonlight I saw her standing there.
Sprinkled stardust in her long flowing hair.

Tell me , are you Robert Lindley ?

If so, a million plaudits .

That sonnet in your last post communicates so easily , and for me - and many others no doubt --- it resonates strongly at a personal level .

P.S . Possibly John Lindley following a fast bit of simple research ?

Not Robert, unless you found the Elixir of Life .

I have been me since as long as I can remember.
On my father's side our bloodline is English/Irish. I am quite familiar with John Lindley the famous poet...
Glad the sonnet was a positive to you. Poetry to me is a way of giving back - a way of analyzing and mulling over life and my past.
Hopefully it helps others and especially the young that face so many things in life without prior knowledge to successfully cope.
Ahhhhh, the ""Elixir of Life"" -- yes that would be light, living, faith, hope and love.....--Tyr
