You can not truly call yourself “peaceful” unless you are capable of great violence.
If you are incapable of violence, you are not peaceful, you are just harmless.

Funny side story: Yesterday, a guy was telling me that Galileo was speaking out against the best scientists of the day. When I said he was actually speaking out against the church and a theological idea from the Bible..... he stood firm that science and religion were the same thing during that time.
But Here's the odd thing Jake, If you look at the real history and not just atheist memes you'll find out that,
the Roman Catholic Church had accepted the Ptolemaic view of the universe. the Scientific (and False) view of the day.
"Ptolemaic system, also called geocentric system or geocentric model, mathematical model of the universe formulated by the Alexandrian astronomer and mathematician Ptolemy about 150 BC and recorded by him in his Almagest and Planetary Hypotheses. The Ptolemaic system is a geocentric cosmology; that is, it starts by assuming that Earth is stationary and at the centre of the universe. The “natural” expectation for ancient societies was that the heavenly bodies (Sun, Moon, planets, and stars) must travel in uniform motion along the most “perfect” path possible, a circle. However, the paths of the Sun, Moon, and planets as observed from Earth are not circular. Ptolemy’s model explained this “imperfection” by postulating that the apparently irregular movements were a combination of several regular circular motions seen in perspective from a stationary Earth. The principles of this model were known to earlier Greek scientists, including the mathematician Hipparchus (c. 150 BC), but they culminated in an accurate predictive model with Ptolemy. The resulting Ptolemaic system persisted, with minor adjustments, until Earth was displaced from the centre of the universe in the 16th and 17th centuries by the Copernican system and by Kepler’s laws of planetary motion."

    .
Galileo was fighting the Ptolemaic system.
The guy you were talking to was basically right. The Church had latched on to the then accepted "scientific" Ptolemaic view and wrongly assumed it as fact.... truth.
The Scientist of the day WERE against Galileo so was the R C Church .. and some of the the priest were in fact scientist.
BTW Galileo, along with many other scientist of the day, were Roman Catholic or Christians of some kind as well.

the idea that Galileo had to "fight" bad ol Church doctrine is one of those false things from pop "history".
Like "Washington chopped down the cherry tree", And everyone in Europe thought the world was flat before Columbus.

It is proper to take alarm at the first experiment on our liberties. The freeman of America did not wait till usurped power had strengthened itself by exercise, and entangled the question in precedents. James Madison
Live as free people, yet without employing your freedom as a pretext for wickedness; but live at all times as servants of God.

There's nothing like not discussing things that should be discussed by posting memes which aren't discussing things that should be discussed.
"when socialism fails, blame capitalism and demand more socialism." - A friend
"You know the difference between libs and right-wingers? Libs STFU when evidence refutes their false beliefs." - Another friend

Then start The discussion in another thread, fj. I know you're capable.

This is a humor thread. It helps the psyche to have some humor every now and then.

It seemed to be drifting into the discussion realm. But there are already too many threads as I've said so often.

Who cares how many there are as long as people are taking about it?

Because then people discuss news stories rather than debate policy and issues.

Don't those news stories provide new and updated material on a subject that adds to the debate?

Why continue to debate outdated material?

Also, debates should have some type of foundation rather than just a one line comeback to an expressed opinion.

So often the case is not adding new and updated information but ignoring previously questioned information and starting from scratch. Where is the flow of discussion if every discussion about a news story has to start from the beginning? At best sometimes is mere variation on a theme that's already been decided.

Clearly not everything posted here is a debate.
