    That being said, I wouldn't use either to measure ice or tides.

    It depends on what's available and how important an exact measurement is. If you are gauging the change in the height of tides, the picnic table would be sufficient to let you know within a foot how much the tide has risen. Only a "scientist" would feel a need for an exact number so that they could record it in a little book to back up an article they might write in an effort to get Federal welfare check...... err...... I mean grant.

    Mundame claims he can use it to measure to within an accuracy of one INCH.
