I've long thought this: S Korea/the Korean Peninsula is a crappy place to be strategically on defense. It would be a crappy place to be period in a war between N Korea with commie support and the US/allies. I don't see much coming out of it for either side but a parking lot. As stated in the article, given current wishy-washy US support, that could play into Un's hands. He's already got a parking lot. Not much to lose and everything to gain.
