President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.

The stunning choice made Obama the third sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize and shocked Nobel observers because Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline. Obama's name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

The committee said it attached special importance to Obama's vision of, and work for, a world without nuclear weapons.

"Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play," the committee said.

As I said: ONCE WAS a worthy achievement. There was a day when receiving the Nobel Prize really meant something. Since they started handing it out to the "nutcase du jour" it has become laughable.

You have hinted at the crux of the problem; Libs do not believe in personal responsibility. The Democratic party platform is based on victimhood; if there were no victims there would be no Democratic party. It is not in their best interest to resolve ANY issue because it is only through the victims of those issues (most of them GREATLY exagerated by the politicians ....ESPECIALLY dems) that they can stay in power. Of course, corrupt organizations like ACORN and unions help!

In every case someone is a vicitm and the ONLY way to solve the 'problem" is to elect Dems who can pass some law or regulation

Well Bush has done a heck of a lot more than Obama. Whether he failed or succeeded is another debate. Obama has done exactly NOTHING and gets awarded the Nobel Prize???

Maybe in your view, doing nothing is worth dancing over. In mine, it is better to have tried and failed (or even better...succeeded) than to not have tried at all.

By the way, I have been convinced the Nobel Prize was a joke since the day they awarded it to Arafat.

If President Obama has any honor or self respect, he will decline the award since he hasnt done anything to earn it.
