Tailfins, I don't think most, or anyone for that fact, know about Brazil Nuts, and what they were very long called prior to the change. Anyway, as reference purposes I have no issue with the word being used. As part of a post, I will often use the word as a factual representation of what another side, or just a part of the story without labeling a particular person. So while the word is not banned here at DP, we would hope it's used in a responsible manner. There are a million other ways to insult one another that don't bring racial slurs into it. Or you can just not insult one another anymore now that you all had your say.

You're looking at it with blinders on. The catalyst was seeing politicians like Jimmy Carter riding around in a jet while asking regular people to sacrifice. The New Deal where people on WPA had to work was one thing, seeing deadbeats who don't want to work not pay for their groceries was quite another.

All in the Family cold not be made today. No way, no how. Truth is, that's a shame. It was a quality show that, at times, tackled serious issues and did so in a way that reached people and advanced the discussion of race in this country.

All in the Family was screened over here in the UK. But who, here, knows of the show's origins ?

That show is an American version of a series of programmes that started out in the UK. The original was called 'Til Death Us Do Part', and the original Archie Bunker character was Alf Garnett, played by Warren Mitchell.

Several series were made. But, sure enough, today it'd be impossible to screen it in the politically correct 21st century (.. or make its equivalent, anyway ..).

Here's a taste of it ('The Blood Donor', itself a sort of spoof of a 1950's Tony Hancock comedy episode of the same name ..) ....

I think it all depends. I've used the word on this board, as part of a discussion and as a word of reference. I think there's a big difference between using a word as part of a discussion, a word still used widely, as opposed to calling someone the word. I think the context in which the word is used makes a lot of difference.

Seriously. Anyone who feels ANY NEED to repeat, or say that word...IMO
is just using the opportunity to use it. Like an excuse to get away with
SWEARING.

In today's world. We all know. Using the descriptive word CONTEXT, tied to the use
of that word....UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, BY ANYONE...just doesn't fly with me.

If we want to seriously STOP the use of the word while calling it RACIST, or OFFENSIVE.
The STOPPAGE must be TOTAL, COMPLETE, and avoided by ALL.
